The Seekers Contest Writer Nominees Announced

by Brant W. Fowler

The top 20 writers in Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment and MTV Comics’ The Seekers Contest have been announced. And one of the top 20 nominees is Comic Related’s own Bill Gladman!

The contest opened at San Diego Comic Con International in July, then ran online until September 23rd after an extended deadline. To enter, writers had to submit ten pages of script featuring a story taking place after a described scene in a provided treatment, as well as a two-page treatment of how they invisioned a 110-page graphic novel.

The 20 nominees are listed on MTV’s Geek subsite where you can download each of their scripts and treatments, then vote for the writer you like the best. Voting is open until 3pm Est, September 30th.

The top 5 vote getters will have their scripts sent to Stan Lee, who will then pick the winner. Said winner will receive a contract worth approximately $10,000 and will be the writer on The Seekers comic.

Head over to and pick your favorite.

We wish everyone, especially our own Bill Gladman, the best of luck in the contest!

A Star Is Born

Star Con 2011 is coming to Springfield Ohio Saturday October 15th. And will be taking place at Main Street Comics And Games , 2125 E.Main Street.

What is Star Con? Well….that’s a very snazzy way of saying Twilight Star Studio’s 2nd year anniversary. Last year we celebrated our first year anniversary at Super Fly Comics And Games in Yellow Springs Ohio and had a blast with some of our closest friends  and fans!

A list of some of the special guests hanging out with us last year included R2-D2, Dr. Strange, Death, and Dave Chapelle… lie.

We had some great friends hanging out with us all day as well including Dustin Carson, Victor Dandridge, and the guys from Studio Akumakaze. One of the highlights of the afternoon which featured Hero Clix tournaments and a filming of “Geek Street” (the fan favorite video show featuring myself and co-host Frank Raynor seen on The Underground Video Network-NEW HOME OF RAYNMAN: THE ULTIMATE PODCAST)…was the fact that Kevin Adkins joined the studio that evening.

The event was covered by the local paper , Comic Related and U.V.N.

What a great day for Springfield Ohio’s only comic producing studio. the studio that never sleeps….Twilight Star!!!!

Believe it or not a whole year has passed since that event and plans are under way for the 2nd year anniversary celebration and the question that keeps popping up is …how in the Hell do we top what we did last year? Well the first step is to have the event in our home town of Springfield. We love Super Fly Comics And Games and they have always been very supportive of everything that we do but we can’t deny the fact that every event we hold on our home ‘Field has been an overwhelming success as the people of Champion City come out to support us in droves.

As a matter of fact the three most successful events to date that the studio was a part of have been Champion City Comic Con 2011, Champion City Comic Con 2010, and Free Comic Book Day at Main Street Comics And Games in that order….all taking place right here in our own home town. So it made sense to have this year’s celebration at Main Street Comics And Games and Scott Riley’s incredible new store front. The shop where Twilight Star comics are available all year long at their own section of the store!!!

If you happened to be at the store this past Free Comic Book Day you’ll remember the store hosted several indie creators…not only Twilight Star but Dave Arhar, Dustin Carson, Chad Lambert, and Studio Akumakaze. It had the feel of a small convention. Actually the first year celebration at Super-Fly felt that way as well.

And very recently while attending this year’s Champion City Disc Golf Tournament co-founder of the studio Gary Church and I were kidding around about making this 2nd year celebration a “real” convention….fellow studio member Tim Hagans joined the the discussion and the name Star Con popped up. A play on Twilight Star.

Needless to say……we liked it!

We had already made plans to set up the tables at the shop Oct. 15t much like we had on Free Comic Book Day. You see Twilight Star has several different members and this is the one event that promises to allow each creator involved with the studio to have their own table space for the whole day. We usually have to take turns and break the table time down into “shifts” when we appear at shows due to the size of the studio. Not this time. Each member will have a table to spotlight the various projects they are working on for Twilight Star.

Each member will be given an opportunity to be interviewed by U.V.N. who will be there covering the celebration.

Here’s a break down-

Gary Church-writer and artist of G-Code, artist on The Cowboy, The Kid, And The Samurai, artist of Perfect Day, artist of A Matter Of Life And Death and The Evil That Men Do , artist on WTF, artist for Jack The Rabbit: Shame On The Night and artist for The Un-Naturals Source Book

Bill Gladman-writer of A Matter Of Life And Death, artist of Business As Usual, artist of The Tree, writer of N.I.B., writer of Driver’s Seat, writer and artist on Jack The Rabbit, writer and artist of Prodigy, artist and inker for the Un-Naturals Source Book, writer of Necrotrancer, writer and inker on the Un-Naturals, writer of the Bumtastic Four, inker on Perfect Day, writer of Tales From The Longbox: Collective Soul, writer and inker on The Evil That Men Do,co- writer of Price For The Asking, writer on If Thy Hand Offends Thee, co-writer of Did Somebody Call for A Hero: Hero Of The Day, writer of Jack The Rabbit Shame On The Night, co-writer on One Night In Chicago and writer of Young And Wasted.

Dan Matthews-cover colorist on Twilight Star Annual #1 and Cygann #1

Kevin Adkins-artist on Dragnet, writer and artist on The Crook, writer and artist The Lam, artist for Jersey Devil, creator of Twilight Star playing card and Heroclix sets.

Stacy Gaston-writer and artist on Cygann, writer and artist on Cyber-Christ, artist on Crossing Pon’s Bridge

And of course Scott Riley will be there. Not only does Scott own Main Street Comics And Games, he hosts Champion City Comic Con, he was the artist on Tales From The Longbox: Collective Soul, and the inker on Butterfly Girl

We’re working on getting a couple of very special guests that have been very instrumental to the success of the studio to attend the show.  The 28th book that the studio has released in the two years of existence will be released the day of the  show….possibly even book # 29!!!! In two years….Hell Yeah!

It will be Halloween Season so feel free to come in costume. There will be Heroclix games hosted by Frank Raynor and Kevin Adkins featuring custom made Twilight Star Heroclix created by Kevin.

Bill will be hosting Marvel trivia games.

New comics, new art prints, new t-shirts. trading cards…and possibly even a live musical guest!!!

And (rumor has it) even the recording of the much anticipated Geek Street #4 for U.V.N. who will be at the shop with us all day.

Sounds like a convention to me!

Back In The Saddle Again

Posted in Uncategorized on August 6, 2011 by billyg67

It’s me. The guy that was “supposed” to post a new blog entry every week. Well…maybe every month and a half is a better goal.

Recently I did a guest stint as a co-host on a podcast called Zone 4 which gets posted once a week on the Comic Related website. And Brant Fowler the mover and shaker behind that show posted a link to this blog in the show notes…so I kind of felt obligated to post something new here….just in case one or two people follow that link and end up here.

Before we go any further, let me return the favor. Here’s a link to that podcast if you want to check it out.

Now to the “new stuff” . Have I had any crazy dreams of late? Why, Yes!!!! Yes I have!!!! But can I remember details…not really. That’s how it is about 99.9% of the time.

But some really cool stuff has been happening as of late. Maybe the first thing I should address should be this.

Have you heard about the Violent Whisper reunion??? I have. Strange thing is, since I was one of the two founding members of the band and wrote 90% of the lyrics and music for the band as well it’s quite funny I have no clue who or where this rumor started but I would like to take the time to clear this up right here and now.

This is NOT going to happen! At least I will not be a part of this reunion if it is in the works, which I seriously doubt it is. The band played their last show May 2001….over ten years ago and I rarely see any of the guys from the band ….except the lead vocalist…Raven Blackrose. Raven and I do stay in touch and recently he and I have been seen together out and about and perhaps this helped fuel these rumors. Raven and I have been playing a lot of disc golf  together…but we are not playing any music together.

BUT if you were a fan of the music of Violent Whisper….and Misled (the band I was in before Violent Whisper) make sure you check out good friend ….Wade Kiger….who will be doing a musical performance in Springfield Ohio, Friday September 9th as part of the Champion City Comic Convention pre-party.

Wade has mentioned that he plans to play a few of those songs in his set.  Wade and I had been in bands together…back when we both were teens and this is a great honor for me. Can’t wait to check out this show!!!

Here’s more info about that.

Champion City Pre-Party
Crazy Joe’s Jamaican Bar-Quality Inn-Leffel’s Lane
Wade Kiger -acoustic guitarist and vocalist from Columbus Ohio will be performing a 90 minute set of music that includes songs from Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Tesla, and many more.  No cover charge.

Speaking of Champion City Comic Convention, Scott Riley and I have been very hard at work at making this…the third year of  this  show the best C4 show to date. Also a huge shout out to fellow Twilight Star member and good friend Joe Pruitt who grabbed the cover for the Champion City 2011 program!!!!

AND…..since I said Twilight Star…..and Champion City….might as well hype up the new book from Twilight Star that will be debuting at the show. That would be  Pandemonium Spotlight #3

The feature story is called Butterfly Girl…..written by indie comic great Dustin Carson and up and coming artist Robin Humer….both of whom will be appearing at Champion City this year. Butterfly Girl is also inked by SCOTT RILEY!!!! Co-organizer of the Champion City show and owner of Main Street Comics And Games.

The cover of this book is by Robin, and Scott plus it’s colored by the GREAT and TALENTED LISA MOORE!!!!!

Also in this book…..”Jersey Devil” written and lettered by Brant Fowler and illustrated by Kevin Adkins. And a really twisted tale written by myself and illustrated and lettered by really cool friend and a guy I worked with on a little web comic you may have heard of…called New Comic Day…and that guy is Chad Strohl. Just saw the pages for the story which is entitled “If Thy Hand Offends Thee” and I have to say I believe this is Chad’s best art to date! I’m very excited about this. This may be the last time Chad and I work on a comic together…and trust me , we both make a statement with this story!!!

There will also be a story written by Josh Brown in the book called “Deer Hunter”…love this story as well.  Know what else I’m excited about? A fantastic story called “Crossing Pawn’s Bridge”. This story is written by my daughter Raichal and she’s working with a very talented artist and Twilight Star’s newest member…Stacy Gaston!!! Here’s a sneak peek at the main character, Rebeca.

Guess what? There’s even more of a sneak peek of “Crossing Pawn’s Bridge” … CHECK OUT PANDEMONIUM SPOTLIGHT #3 !!!!

Finally…been doing some writing…just finished writing THREE “Simon Pryce” stories….a two page story entitled “Dirt” which will be a back up feature in Price For The Asking  #2…coming soon. “Dirt” will also feature some art by artist Rob Davis.

Another two page story that re-unites me with the original artist for Price For The Asking Brain Latimer!! The series runs as a web comic on Comic Related and later gets collected in printed form. This story is called “Boys Of Summer”.

That is just a teaser of what Brian and I have in store for the fourth Price For The Asking story entitled “Motor City Madhouse” , a full 24 page adventure featuring Detroit’s best private investigator….Simon Pryce.

Want to check the strip out…here you go! Stories #1 and #2 for your reading pleasure…

In the mean time….check me out every other Monday with Frank Raynor and Brant Fowler on the RaynMan Power Hour Podcast…

and announcing it first here… out for Joe Pruitt and I who will be making

a pre-Champion City appearance at a local comic shop near you!!! Details coming soon!!!

Until then….Rock Hard And Ride Free.

I Had A Drink With A Dead Man This Afternoon

Posted in Uncategorized on June 4, 2011 by billyg67

I haven’t posted a blog here at the good ol’ Diary Of A Gladman” blog site for a while. And I thought that little title for this particular piece would grab some attention.

Maybe it did…maybe it didn’t….but I’ll go on to explain the origin of the title a bit.

I had just gotten off the phone with my closest friend in the world….Frank Raynor. We had a great conversation. He helped me through a few things he knew was troubling me. I’m telling you good friends like Frank are harder to find than a golden ticket to the chocolate factory.

Afterward I took a shower and washed off the remnants of two and half hours of yard work. The shower felt good over muscles that have had their fair share of abuse the last few days. Found myself working on some orders at work the last two days of the work week that were a little on the heavy side. Thursday night I rode 24 miles on the local bike trail with another long time friend and former guitarist, Rick Lazear (we were in Perilous Sanctuary, Eternity’s End, and Project X together…and a short lived version of Misled)….and Friday night I was out playing a couple of rounds of disc golf with more friends of a high quality nature…Tim Hagans and Martez Sparks. (But after the way the two of them beat me up on the course….maybe I don’t want to be friends with them any more….just kidding.)

The shower was just what the doctor ordered…..turned on some tunes (Diamonds And Pearls by Prince was the first song that came on…immediately I thought of my dear departed friend Darrell “Buff” Buffington as I always do when I hear this song….the man loved this song and actually sang it quite well…the thoughts of his silly ass sitting at his drawing table singing that song….in a cloud of incense as he drew still haunts me in a pleasant sense of that word to this day.)

….made lunch….pizza rolls and cottage cheese….turned off the music and decided to read a comic book. Micronauts #30. I try to read at least two comics from my collection every day and I kind of got sidetracked with the Micronauts as I was reading my “Cosmic Marvel” long box.

The combination of the physical end of the last few days, burning the midnight oil last night (as I always do on Friday nights), a soothing shower, and a full stomach made me drowsy. I fell asleep and dropped my book right after Princess Mari and Commander Rann got swallowed by the whale (thingie) and Bug realized he was going to have to go under water in an attempt to rescue them…..

Bug hates water.

I forced myself to wake enough to finish the book (which wasn’t boring by any means). Somewhere the melody of the ghetto ice cream truck got sucked into the window by the fan locked in place there fighting off an early June afternoon that was about 20 degrees hotter than early June should be….and I decided….screw it. I’m taking a nap. I love naps. Nap is one of my favorite three letter words. I take one every day at work (during lunch) and I thought a short nap would feel great.

I was right. The nap was great……the dream I had during the nap was rather weird.

I have weird dreams….several of my songs and stories have been inspired by my weird dreams for years. I blame my over hyper imagination. Whatever the case I have written scenes from my dreams in songs, stories, blogs and role playing games for decades. This afternoon I find myself writing about aspects of yet another dream.

I was in a bar. (I don’t go to bars very often and when I do it’s to listen to local bands and I never drink anything other than soda…I only just recently celebrated 10 years of sobriety). The place was empty but at the same time full of cigarette smoke from a room full of un-seen smokers, I guess. I had never been in this bar but at the same time recognized it immediately. It was a strange hybrid hodge podge mish mash of Walden’s Night Club (my band Violent Whisper played that club quite often….I played my last show with Violent Whisper at this bar….just over ten years ago….the same night I had my last drink)…and a place called the Liberty Belle.

Funny thing is….the Liberty Belle ain’t a real bar. It’s a bar I created as a backdrop for two comic books I write….Necrotrancer and the Un-Naturals. Strangely in the comics I write….Buff is the bartender and owner of The Liberty Belle. A bar that is actually haunted.

It appeared this bar had a ghost too.

Sitting at a corner table, all by his self was one man nursing a bottle of Wild Turkey…I knew the man and his drink of choice all too well.

The man was indeed Darrell Buffington. Buff has been dead since Feb. 2000…eleven damn years ago. Buff didn’t drink…or rarely drank. He was diabetic and diabetes and alcohol don’t get along so good.

I pulled up a chair…he smiled and poured me a drink. And then he spoke.

“Thanks for coming by and seeing me this past Monday”. Monday was Memorial Day. My wife Ellie and I visited the final resting places of my father….then my sister….my grandparents…an aunt and uncle….and finally Buff. Buff’s headstone was overgrown a bit. Ellie and I spent a few minutes clearing the tall grass from the marker.

“I try to make it every year….sometimes I don’t make it.”

“You make it more than others.”

I took a drink of my shot of whiskey….it was like kissing a woman for the first time all over again. I put the shot glass down.

“You look good for a dead man” I said.

“So do you” he replied.

During the dream Buff’s comment did not really bother me…it just seemed to make sense somehow. But after waking up that statement bothered me quite a bit. Buff died when he was 44 years old. I will be turning 44 in just a few weeks…in late July. And yes immediately after waking up I counted the days…thankfully the amount of days between today and my birthday is not 44. It’s 51.

If it was 44 I think I would have pissed down my leg.

Back to the dream….weird….last night I read Micronauts #29…..and they fought Nightmare….an old for of Dr. Strange’s…..

“You wanted to talk” Buff continued.

I did?

“I….don’t know what to do.”

“You never did.” He tried to re-fill my drink, I waved it off. Even in my dream I wanted no more of the demon living in that bottle. “And you’ve always been a pussy. You and I both know that. You can’t hide that fact. You’re afraid. You’ve always been afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Failure. You’ve always been afraid of failure. You hate that word a whole fucking lot and I don’t really know what it is about failing that scares you so damn much.”

At this point in the dream I knew exactly what Buff was going to say next…I’ve heard this speech several times while he was still living and when he wasn’t singing Prince songs.

“Failure is easy. Any damn idiot can fail. It doesn’t take brains or balls to fail. People smarter and braver than you fail every day. What you should be afraid of is success. Success is a scary motherfucker.”

And in the past….this was where Buff would stop. It was enough.

In this place… in this dream he continued.

“Finding success is hard. It takes more than time and money….it takes blood, sweat, and tears. It’s like climbing a cliff wall covered with thorns. To quote David Lee Roth you got to bleed for it baby. Sometimes you lose more than you gain in the effort. Friends fall to the way side and they curse your name as they plummet back to the ground….but if you really want it you keep climbing until you get to the top. And then you get there….success. Everything you ever wanted…..and she’s the sexiest damn bitch you ever laid your eyes on….but you can’t even say her name. She laughs at you. Picks you up…chews you up….and spits you out. Kicks you off the edge and you fall through the clouds and crash and burn like the friends you lost on your way to the top.”

“What then.”

“If you really want it….you start climbing again.”

And then the phone rang….and I woke up. I checked the caller i.d and scanned the number half expecting it to be Buff’s number…which I will never forget…but it wasn’t a number I knew.

Phone numbers I don’t know and me don’t get along very well either.

The dream started to already fade so I wanted to write it down quickly and while doing so…I couldn’t help but wonder what the Hell it was supposed to mean. I don’t feel like I have succeeded at anything…although at times I feel very chewed up and spit out.

How do you measure success?

And does Buff think I have succeeded where he never did…..or do I just fail often enough to entertain him?

Better To Burn Out Than Fade Away???

Posted in Uncategorized on May 1, 2011 by billyg67

Okay when you hear that phrase…do you think….Neil Young…or Def Leppard? Or …Kurt Cobain?  Just curious. Neil of course coined the phrase first in his song “Hey Hey, My My”….I think that was 1979.  Most people my age remember Def Leppard starting their 1983 hit single “Rock Of Ages” with the same phrase.

In 1994 Kurt Cobain would use the same phrase in his suicide note.

So in many ways…for the sum of three decades the phrase has been committed to memory for different reasons, by people of different ages while remaining true to itself.

It’s also a phrase that has bee weighing heavily on my thoughts for weeks now. It’s been the better part of a month since Gem City Comic Con in Dayton Ohio. The show was April 3rd…it is April 30th as I type this. During the days that have been nothing more than a lost daze between the two dates…I have found myself at a crossroads.

A place between here and there. A place I have been several times before. And a place I know all too well. I have burned out….geared up too high. Achieved certain goals…and then stalled as things continue to fall between the cracks while I try in vain to find my misplaced motivation.

This happens to me at times. More often than I care for. It happens to a lot of creative people I know. It crushes some of us and others find a way to pull themselves back up out of the mud and get back on the horse. I have been fortunate enough to have been one of those fighting souls who tires of rolling in the quagmire of their own making after a few weeks and manages to finally shake off this self created funk to go on to be more productive and creative than before.

And the cycle starts anew.

This most recent bout of “burn out” has hung on a little longer than most. I think this time around I am going to have to make long lasting decisions if I’m to find my mojo once more.

Several things need to be done and I have vowed as of May 2nd I will force my way back on the horse and ride…..but at the same time….I plan on  making some changes.

To be perfectly honest. I try spinning too many plates at once. I’m letting a few fall to the wayside.

In the meantime I have developed a list of things that must get done soon. And in the order they need to be done.

  1. Format the final inside cover for Ron Fortier’s Tales Of The Macabre #1 so this book can go to print.
  2. Finish inking the last two panels of “The Evil That Men Do”….these two pages have been sitting on my drawing table untouched for weeks.
  3. Finish typing a recorded interview with writer Tony Doug Wright.
  4. Finish the development of the Twilight Star website with Brant Fowler….this is crucial as it plays a large role in other changes I plan to make later.

When these things are done I can move on to my next list….

  1. Ink the next two pages of The Un-Naturals #1
  2. Finish writing the last five pages to Young and Wasted
  3. Finish writing the last ten pages for Duality-with Studio Akumakaze
  4. Type out the fourteen page Necrotrancer/Cybercat crossover “One Night In Chicago”
  5. Write the five page preview to Metal Heart
  6. Finish penciling and inking the last four pages of Jack The Rabbit #2

And from there………..

  1. Finish writing and penciling Prodigy #2
  2. Write the seven page story “Remember Tomorrow”
  3. Start writing “Ballroom Blitz” for Ravenwood: Stepson Of Mystery Vol.2
  4. Finish looking over a writing proposal that involve Frank Raynor and I and an artist on the west coast.

fter those fourteen things are done….I’ll probably crash again for a few weeks…..stare into space for a few days….brush myself off and do it all again…..

But as I mentioned I will be making a few changes…believe it or not the above list is very “small” compared to what I usually weigh myself down with. So what am I going to be doing differently? What things am I stepping away from for a while at least?

  1. My role as Executive Editor of Twilight Star Studios will change….as soon as the website is live and active….watch for an announcement there as soon as the site does go live.
  2. My involvement in the Price For The Asking web comic is on “cruise control” for the next eight months. Co-creator and co-writer Ron Fortier is the writer for the current 24 part arc…the story for the next 24 part arc which features both Ron and I as writers is already done.
  3. My involvement the New Comic Day web comic will also diminish a great deal after strip #104. This will be the last new strip I will write for a while. There are a few older ones I have written that are in the “vault” that will be used up….after they are gone co-creator and co-writer Eric Ratcliffe will be writing the strip on his own for a while with some help from the rest of the creative team (artist-Chad Strohl, colorist –Lisa Moore and letterer Brant Fowler) until I return some time after strip #130.
  4. Once again my involvement in the planning of Champion City Comic Con will be changed as well. Look for an announcement elsewhere about this in the next few weeks…some time around May 13th.

Not fading away….but planning to rise from the ashes.
